To estimate paint from surface area, calculate the area to be painted, subtract areas that will not be painted, multiply by the number of coats, then divide by the paint coverage rate.
Paint Estimate Formula
Add waste after this calculation:
Final amount = paint needed x (1 + waste rate)
Step 1: Find the Paintable Surface Area
Use the formula for the object you are painting. A wall uses rectangle area, width x height. A closed cylinder uses 2πrh + 2πr2. A pipe side uses lateral area only, 2πrh. A box-shaped room uses the sum of wall rectangles.
| Object | Area Usually Needed | Calculator |
|---|---|---|
| Room walls | Wall area minus openings | Rectangular prism |
| Cylindrical tank | Side plus caps if painted | Cylinder |
| Pipe | Lateral area only | Pipe surface area |
| Dome or sphere | Curved outside area | Sphere |
Step 2: Subtract Openings or Unpainted Areas
For walls, subtract doors, windows, cabinets, built-ins, or panels you will not paint. For tanks and pipes, exclude caps, flanges, bases, or contact surfaces if they will not be coated.
Step 3: Use the Coverage Rate
Coverage rate comes from the paint label. Common values are only planning estimates; rough surfaces, primer, spray application, and dark color changes can reduce coverage.
| Product | Typical Coverage | Use Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Interior latex paint | 350-400 ft2/gal | Smooth drywall |
| Exterior paint | 250-350 ft2/gal | Siding, masonry, weathered surfaces |
| Primer | 250-350 ft2/gal | Bare drywall, stains, patched areas |
| Industrial coating | Depends on dry film thickness | Use product datasheet |
Worked Example: Room Paint
Paint needed = (420 x 2) / 350 = 2.40 gal
Final amount = 2.40 x 1.10 = 2.64 gal
Buy 3 gallons
Worked Example: Cylindrical Tank
Side area = 2πrh = 2 x π x 3 x 12 = 226.19 ft2
Paint needed for one coat = 226.19 / 300 = 0.75 gal
For two coats = 1.51 gal
Buy 2 gallons before waste adjustment
Waste Factor
| Surface | Suggested Waste |
|---|---|
| Smooth interior wall | 5-10% |
| Textured wall or rough exterior | 10-20% |
| Sprayed coating | 15-30% |
| Complex object with edges | 10-20% |
Common Mistakes
- Ignoring second coats: multiply paintable area by the number of coats.
- Mixing units: do not divide square meters by ft2/gal coverage.
- Painting total area when only lateral area is needed: pipes and open tanks may not need caps.
- Skipping waste: touch-ups, texture, overspray, and roller loss need margin.
Use the Calculators
Start with the matching shape calculator: Rectangular Prism Surface Area Calculator, Cylinder Surface Area Calculator, Pipe Surface Area Calculator, or Sphere Surface Area Calculator.
