Swimming pool surface area is the total interior area of the pool shell — floor plus walls — and it drives estimates for paint, plaster, tile, and vinyl liner.
Rectangular Pool Surface Area Formula
Rectangular Pool:
SA = lw + 2ld + 2wd
Example: 10 × 5 × 1.5 m pool → SA = 50 + 30 + 15 = 95 m²
For variable depth: davg = (d₁ + d₂) / 2
SA = lw + 2ld + 2wd
Example: 10 × 5 × 1.5 m pool → SA = 50 + 30 + 15 = 95 m²
For variable depth: davg = (d₁ + d₂) / 2
Oval and L-Shaped Pool Calculations
Oval pool: Floor area ≈ π(l/2)(w/2). Wall area = perimeter × depth. Use Ramanujan's approximation for the ellipse perimeter.
L-shaped pool: Decompose into two rectangles sharing one wall. Calculate each shell area, then subtract the shared internal wall.
Pool Paint and Plaster Coverage Rates
| Material | Coverage (ft²/gal) | Coverage (m²/L) |
|---|---|---|
| Chlorinated rubber paint | 250–350 | 23–33 |
| Epoxy pool paint | 300–400 | 28–37 |
| Pool plaster (per bag) | 86–107 ft² | 8–10 m² |
