To estimate paint from surface area, calculate the area to be painted, subtract areas that will not be painted, multiply by the number of coats, then divide by the paint coverage rate.

Paint Estimate Formula

Paint needed = (Paintable area x coats) / coverage

Add waste after this calculation:
Final amount = paint needed x (1 + waste rate)

Step 1: Find the Paintable Surface Area

Use the formula for the object you are painting. A wall uses rectangle area, width x height. A closed cylinder uses 2πrh + 2πr2. A pipe side uses lateral area only, 2πrh. A box-shaped room uses the sum of wall rectangles.

Cylindrical tankSide plus caps if paintedCylinder
PipeLateral area onlyPipe surface area

Step 2: Subtract Openings or Unpainted Areas

For walls, subtract doors, windows, cabinets, built-ins, or panels you will not paint. For tanks and pipes, exclude caps, flanges, bases, or contact surfaces if they will not be coated.

Paintable area = total surface area - unpainted area

Step 3: Use the Coverage Rate

Coverage rate comes from the paint label. Common values are only planning estimates; rough surfaces, primer, spray application, and dark color changes can reduce coverage.

ProductTypical CoverageUse Notes
Interior latex paint350-400 ft2/galSmooth drywall
Exterior paint250-350 ft2/galSiding, masonry, weathered surfaces
Primer250-350 ft2/galBare drywall, stains, patched areas
Industrial coatingDepends on dry film thicknessUse product datasheet

Worked Example: Room Paint

Given: paintable wall area = 420 ft2, coats = 2, coverage = 350 ft2/gal, waste = 10%

Paint needed = (420 x 2) / 350 = 2.40 gal
Final amount = 2.40 x 1.10 = 2.64 gal
Buy 3 gallons

Worked Example: Cylindrical Tank

Given: radius = 3 ft, height = 12 ft, paint side only, coverage = 300 ft2/gal

Side area = 2πrh = 2 x π x 3 x 12 = 226.19 ft2
Paint needed for one coat = 226.19 / 300 = 0.75 gal
For two coats = 1.51 gal
Buy 2 gallons before waste adjustment
